Partners in Prevention Leadership Award

Travelers

for outstanding leadership in furthering science-based prevention programs

Travelers, a partner with The Governor's Prevention Partnership since 1991, has proven a significant champion of prevention in the state of Connecticut.  Through its general support, investment in new programs and commitment to raising awareness through the media, Travelers has touched the lives of thousands of children and families. In 2005, Travelers spearheaded The Governor's Prevention Partnership's mentoring evaluation project by providing the vision and funding to develop a focused evaluation process to strengthen, measure and ultimately inform positive outcomes in Hartford's mentoring programs.  Travelers continues to demonstrate its leadership by providing resources and direction to strengthen the public-private partnership, including Travelers Connecticut Foundation President Marlene Ibsen's dedicated participation on our Board of Directors.  In addition, we applaud Travelers' extensive involvement in mentoring through its 27-year-old Travelers Tutorial Program, involving more than 100 employee volunteers who mentor and tutor local elementary school students weekly on the company's downtown Hartford campus; the Everybody Wins! mentoring program, in which over 100 Travelers employees regularly read with young children at Sand Elementary School in Hartford; and numerous other volunteer and funding commitments in the Hartford community.

Partners in Prevention Innovation Award

Webster Bank
for advancing prevention through school-based mentoring

Webster has been a partner of The Governor's Prevention Partnership since 1995, providing substantial resources and guidance to further prevention initiatives statewide.  In 2002, a small group of employees at Webster Bank initiated a corporate mentoring program to mentor young people at local schools; the program has grown significantly into a model endeavor spanning Webster's entire footprint. In addition, Webster created an innovative Mentoring Data Base Management System to centralize information to help ensure that the program runs efficiently. This newly created system supports nationally recognized quality standards.  Always looking for ways to support local school-based mentoring efforts, the bank conducts regular mentor training meetings, supports many events including the annual mentor conference, provides sponsorship of materials for mentors and provides stipends to local schools for supplies.  Through the leadership of Senior Vice President Laurance Selnick on our Board of Directors, Webster demonstrates its passion for mentoring programs. The actions of Webster employees continue to provide strength and vision to advance the public-private partnership.

Partners in Prevention Media Award

CBS Radio, Hartford
for outstanding commitment to raising awareness about prevention through the media

CBS Radio, Hartford has long recognized the critical importance of airing prevention public service announcements and has been involved in the extensive work of The Governor's Prevention Partnership since 2004.  We greatly value our partnership with CBS Radio, Hartford and applaud its efforts to develop effective campaigns, which lead to increased corporate funding for public service announcements.  In 2005, CBS Radio, Hartford developed its Kids Shout Out campaign, engaging young people in writing and recording prevention and safety messages for other young people. CBS Radio also wholeheartedly embraces the annual National Mentoring Month mentor recruitment campaign each January.  Throughout the year, CBS Radio routinely provides generous donations of free public service time for anti-substance and anti-violence messages.  Media messaging helps the public understand risks and take action to keep Connecticut youth safe, successful and drug-free.  We commend CBS Radio, Hartford for its unwavering commitment to prevention.
