December 14: "Teen Methamphetamine Use, Cigarette Smoking at Lowest Levels in NIDA's 2009 Monitoring the Future Survey"

In the most recent survey by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), it appears that methamphetamine and cigarette use has dropped significantly among teens, however, prescription drug abuse continues to remain high. The 2009 Monitoring the Future survey also found that marijuana use among eighth, tenth, and twelfth graders has stalled, with rates at approximately the same levels over the last five years. NIDA also measures attitudes towards drugs, finding that the percentage for eight graders who view occasional marijuana smoking as potentially harmful has decreased from 57.9 percent in 1991 to 44.8 percent in the most recent survey.
