A CONNECTICUT MENTORING MOMENT
In Celebration Of Connecticut Mentoring Month

Ray and his mentor, Maryann, were matched at the Plainville School School-Based Mentoring Program
when Ray was in the 3rd grade.

Meet Ray, an articulate and determined college student. When Ray was in 3rd grade, he was having difficulty maintaining self control in class.  With some help from his mother, he was recommended for the Plainville School-Based Mentoring Program. He was soon matched with Maryann. When they first started together, Ray would ask his teacher almost every day if his mentor was coming. Throughout elementary school the two would have lunch, talk, play games and simply enjoy each others company.  As he was `graduating' from elementary school, he was asked if he wanted Maryann to continue meeting with him; he said yes.

As Ray made his way through middle school and into high school, they continued their relationship.  Like most mentor/mentee matches they share a special bond.  Maryann was faithful in coming to see Ray and he was appreciative to see her and to spend time doing things together.  He knew he could depend on her coming to see him, and Maryann consistently came with a positive outlook and smile on her face. The fact she listened and never judged allowed Ray to feel comfortable talking to her about anything.

Ray has grown up to be a fine young man and laughs when he remembers himself in 3rd grade. While Ray now towers over his mentor in stature, he still leans on her for guidance. He is continuing his education and knows Maryann is someone who will always be there for him to share his successes and advocate for him through the tough times. For Maryann, it has been a fulfilling experience to watch him grow and mature; she truly impacted Ray's life and instilled life long lessons.
