New Law Decriminalizes Possession of Less Than One-Half Ounce of Marijuana
Explanation of Penalties
Public Act 11-71, An Act Concerning the Penalty for Certain Nonviolent Drug Offenses, was signed into law by Governor Malloy and takes effect July 1, 2011. The new law decriminalizes possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana for personal use. It is important for all adults who work with youth to emphasize that "decriminalization" of marijuana does not mean "legalization" of the drug. Instead, decriminalization of less than one-half ounce creates a third tier in regards to drug offenses, as depicted below. Furthermore, this act does not condone the use of marijuana in the State of Connecticut.
