Alcohol And Special Events...Good Time For A Plan
Chris Bartolotta, CT State Police
Managing alcohol at special events such as open air concerts, tailgating at sporting events, fairs/festivals, can be a complex and challenging experience for communities.  When alcohol is added to events whether large or small, planned or spontaneous, consumption of alcohol increases the events complexity.  Alcohol-related incidents and prevention of underage drinking are especially challenging for law enforcement and other first responders as it relates to the public health and safety of all attendees. This session provides an overview of special events management and steps to be taken to properly manage these events.

Bridging The Gap: GIS & Alcohol Policy Change
Robert Pezzolesi, NY Center for Policy Solutions
Geographic information system (GIS) mapping is a powerful tool that can help to diagnose
community alcohol problems, as well as engage the public in policy change. However, GIS is not fully utilized by communities due to technical limitations and other barriers. Even when place-based alcohol problems are correctly identified, other barriers may prevent the implementation of evidence-based policies.  Accordingly, this workshop will seek to bridge the divide between research and policy change on alcohol through: a user-friendly introduction to the GIS process; an overview of the spatial nature of many alcohol problems; and, an interactive discussion where participants will be encouraged to discuss possible projects with an emphasis on practical, collaborative problem-solving.

In addition, it will provide prevention techniques and strategies that are known to work with the college population.

Drinking On Campus - A Problem.  A Partnership.  A Solution?
Sgt. Michael Baden, New Britain Police Department
Underage drinking is a nationwide problem.  Binge drinking by youth and young adults results in alcohol related criminal and nuisance behavior.  Police respond and all too often nothing happens to the offenders, causing further frustration.  A message is sent that this behavior is acceptable.  Research shows that this behavior causes not only physical damage to the community, but physical damage to the offender as well.  Schools, communities, and the police have unsuccessfully tried to tackle the issue individually; however, advancements are being made through partnerships that combine enforcement and education.  This program will discuss a problem, a partnership, and the methods used to address underage drinking, with a concentration on party interdiction.

New Trends, New Challenges
Stephanie Moran, The Governor's Prevention Partnership
Current and emerging trends in alcohol and other illicit drugs are frequently changing.  This workshop will provide a look into emerging patterns in marketing and usage of alcohol and drugs.  Many trends migrate to the US from Europe and the military.  When it comes to current trends - if it is on their radar, it needs to be on ours.
