PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Welcome to The Governor's Prevention Partnership website where you will learn about the exciting and valuable work we are doing and, most importantly, how you can get involved! Since its inspirational founding over 20 years ago by then Governor William O'Neill and former Connecticut Mutual CEO, Dennis Mullane, The Partnership has led the prevention movement in Connecticut.  With our business, community, school, and funding partners we are assuring that our children and youth have the tools and support needed to live and work productively, free from substance abuse and violence.

The Governor's Prevention Partnership's goal is straightforward -- creating a better future for our children and youth, our communities, and our workplaces. We do this by marshaling state-of-the-art knowledge, practical tools and resources, strategic partnerships and thousands of caring citizens toward this end. We believe that our activities in the following areas help youth develop into healthy, safe, successful, and drug-free adults:

    • Increasing the number of youth who have the caring support of a mentor
    • Helping schools develop and implement effective drug and violence prevention programming including Student Assistance Programs, bullying, conflict resolution and peer mediation programs
    • Giving parents the skills they need to protect their children against drugs and other problems
    • Helping local communities build coalitions and programs to address underage drinking
    • Delivering anti-drug messages through the media
    • Helping colleges/universities address issues and behavior related to alcohol abuse

We will not achieve this in isolation and so we re-dedicate ourselves to continuing current partnerships and starting new ones. The words of former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall speak to the value of partnership on organizational as well as personal levels:

"None of us has gotten where we are solely by pulling ourselves up from our own bootstraps. We got here because somebody... bent down and helped us."

I encourage you to join us and look forward to our work together.
