SAFE AND DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES (SDFSC)
In 1995, The Governor's Prevention Partnership created the Safe Schools and Communities
Coalition to build and support the use of best practices to prevent youth crime
and violence. Now expanded to include alcohol and other drug issues, these efforts
are coordinated under the umbrella of the Safe and Drug-free Schools and Communities
(SDSC). SDSC provides technical support and training to hundreds of schools implementing
student assistance, violence prevention and peer mediation programs.
Despite the decline in numbers of students experiencing the negative impact of
alcohol and other drugs since 1998, more than 50 percent of Connecticut's youth
continue to deal with issues of drug use, family alcoholism, bullying and child
abuse. These issues can significantly interfere with a child's ability to learn
effectively. Schools are learning and implementing effective strategies to decrease
the negative impact of alcohol, other drugs and violence through Safe and Drug-free
Schools and Communities programs and services.
The Governor's Prevention Partnership works with local prevention councils to
address issues interfering with student safety and success. Contact your local prevention council to get involved.
