Mentoring in the Wake of Community Violence

2021 saw a spike in violence across some Connecticut communities. Hartford, for example, had its deadliest year since 2003 (source: The Hartford Courant). Mentors can play a critical role in helping young people foster resilience in the wake of community violence. Kyrinda Richardson (Youth Manager, Urban League of Greater Hartford) and Stephan Palmer (Executive Director, Youth on Fire) from the Greater Hartford Mentoring Collaborative will discuss taking a trauma-informed approach to youth mentoring that helps to foster resiliency. All participants will receive a copy of our guide “Helping Young People Process Current Events” and related tip sheet, “Guidance for Mentors on Talking to Mentees and Current Events.”
