PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT: Emmett O'Brien Technical High School: All-Abilities Alliance
Emmett O'Brien Technical High School located in Ansonia, Connecticut has implemented the All-Abilities Alliance to celebrate differences in their school and speak out about Autism. The Alliance is comprised of 9th-11th grade students who meet once a month. One of their overarching goals is to promote diversity and acceptance throughout the school. In combating stigmas around students with disabilities, they have learned to put their words into action.
April was Autism Awareness month. In collaboration with the Student Council, staff and students helped recognize this developmental disability by wearing Autism Awareness t-shirts on dress-down days throughout the month. The All-Abilities Alliance Club assisted by providing information to students and staff about the disorder, the characteristics of people with the disability and how to communicate with individuals that have autism. Through a virtual flyer that went to all students and faculty, the Alliance educated the student body on what Autism is and the various characteristics associated with Autism.
The Partnership applauds the All-Abilities Alliance at Emmett O’Brien Technical High School that has fostered a learning environment to encourage acceptance and inclusion at its school and in the community. It has established a true appreciation of the unique aspects of all people.
