We know that young people whose parents talk to them about the dangers of drug and alcohol use are 50% less likely to engage in substance use. With this principle in mind, the Por Los Niños initiative employs a family engagement model to prevent substance abuse among Hartford youth. To actualize this, we have partnered with Family Life Education to engage parents in community cafes and other educational events that teach them how to identify youth substance use and how to have conversations about drugs and alcohol use. This program also seeks to raise awareness through a bilingual, community-informed public awareness campaign. By connecting and convening schools, community organizations, law enforcement and other community aspects, Por Los Niños aims at addressing substance abuse prevention by strengthening community connectivity and resources.
